Blocked drains are one of the most common problems we come across and we know what a nuisance they can be. There’s a number of early signs that you can look out for when it comes to blocked drains. Toilet water levels that are too high or too low can be a sign of a potential blockage. Another thing to keep an eye on is changes to the speed in which your water drains. If you notice slow draining water in your kitchen sink, laundry sink, shower or bath, this could be a sign that your drain is blocked. Another common warning sign of a blocked drain is hearing gurgling sounds coming from your kitchen, bathroom or laundry. Blocked drains can also affect nearby appliances, so if your washing machine or dishwasher suddenly stops working, it may be due to a blocked drain. Foul smells and odours coming from your drains can be caused by a blocked drain.
A blocked drain can be fixed quickly and easily. However, if left untreated, a blocked drain can become a serious health hazard that may end up costing you thousands in damage. The blockage won’t let other waste pass and it will continue to accumulate until it begins to come up and overflow. We’ve been called out to urgent blocked drain overflow in bathrooms, kitchens and backyards too. We’ve seen waste damage carpets, furniture and landscaping. The warning signs are there, take action early to save yourself money and stress.
As always, prevention is better than cure. There’s some things you can do around your home to keep your drains clear. The most common culprit of sewer blockages is tree roots. Tree roots will seek out nutrients and water in order to survive. Tree roots find their way into pipes via hairline cracks. Once inside they begin to grown until eventually blocking your drain completely. Take a walk around your property and carefully inspect the types of trees and plants in your garden and ensure they’re in appropriate locations.
The next most common cause of blocked drains is unwanted items being flushed down the toilet. If you’d like to avoid a blocked drain, ensure the only thing being flushed down the toilet is toilet paper and bodily waste. All other items, including ‘flushable wipes’, should be disposed of in the bin.
Hair, lint, food scraps, female hygiene products and baby wipes are the most common items we find in blocked drains.
Oil should never be flushed down the drain as it solidifies and can cause significant blockages. Instead, wait for the oil to cool down then dispose of in your bin.
